When temperatures drop and snow blankets Juneau's steep roads, most people stay indoors. But for Steve, a driver with Delta Western, that's exactly when his work becomes most essential—and when he feels most proud of what he does.
"It's an island. We see each other all the time," Steve explains with the easy familiarity that comes from being a recognizable fixture in his community.
The Face Behind the Wheel
"Pride comes from knowing we're not just delivering fuel—we're taking care of our community. When clients introduce their kids to you by name, that's when you know you're doing something right," Steve shares.
For Steve, these connections are what transform a job into something meaningful.
"When I first moved to Juneau, nobody knew who I was," he recalls. "Now it's 'you're the Delta Western delivery guy! I saw you delivering to my neighbor.'"
Alaska's challenging conditions often turn routine deliveries into something much more significant. Steve remembers one particularly steep delivery during icy conditions when he spotted an elderly customer who had fallen outside her home.
Without hesitation, he jumped from his truck to help her safely inside—only to discover afterward that he'd actually arrived at his intended delivery address. Today, whenever he returns to her home, she always has something special waiting for him.
Above and Beyond: When You Need It Most
"We deliver on Sundays—most don't, but we do because if somebody is out, they're out! That's our client!" Steve emphasizes. For families and businesses who've found themselves without fuel on a weekend, this commitment to service makes all the difference.
This dedication to doing the right thing is simply part of who Steve is. Recently, he noticed someone walking in 27-degree weather and offered a ride without hesitation. "It goes back to character and knowing what you stand for," he explained.
To Steve, "Fueling Alaska Safely" isn't just words—it's a promise to be there when you need him, regardless of the conditions.
