Recognizing Delta Western’s commitment to workplace safety
Each August, OSHA’s Safe + Sound Week recognizes the work that goes into building safer operations. At Delta Western, that work is part of every delivery, every route, and every decision made before a truck leaves the yard.
For more than 40 years, Delta Western has served Alaska with local knowledge, care, and a strong commitment to safety. In 2025, that commitment was reflected in a significant milestone: zero safety reportable incidents across the company.
The story behind that milestone begins in the field.
Driver-Led, Road-Tested
Delta Western’s safety culture is built by the people closest to the job. Regular safety meetings are led by drivers and crew members who understand the realities of operating in this region. These conversations cover current conditions, construction updates, equipment considerations, near misses, and lessons that can help strengthen future performance.
That same emphasis on open communication supports our Stop Work Authority. Every employee has the ability to pause operations when a situation does not feel safe. This practice reinforces a shared responsibility for preventing incidents and protecting our people, customers, and the land we share.
What Happens Before the Trip Begins
A safe delivery depends on the information teams gather before a truck is on the road. In Haines, our crew actively monitors local updates from community sources, including route closure notices, social media posts, and information shared by area construction companies.
That local awareness even helped the team avoid a big service delay. Late on a weekend evening, a construction company posted about an upcoming road closure. One of our own saw the update, flagged it, and shared it with their manager ahead of the Monday morning meeting. With that information in hand, the team adjusted the schedule, completed two deliveries before the closure began, and kept service moving for customers.
Protecting What Powers Us
Delta Western tracks and reports operations against industry standards while continuing to review best practices and prevention strategies. These efforts help teams identify opportunities for improvement, reduce risk, and maintain a high level of readiness across the company.
The company also operates in full compliance with EPA, ADEC, OSHA, and DOT regulations and maintains safeguards designed to prevent spills and support rapid response. Through SAVE, Alaska’s Values Everyday, Delta Western reinforces these standards through ongoing training and processes that help ensure excellent service across the state.
