School’s Back in Session: A Safety Message from Delta Western
Keeping Alaska Students Safe, One Trip at a Time
At Delta Western, safety and reliability are at the heart of everything we do. We’re proud to power communities across Alaska, from fueling fishing vessels to heating homes, businesses, and schools. In fact, we’re honored to provide heating fuel for the Juneau School District, helping keep classrooms warm and welcoming as a new school year begins.
And because many of us are parents, neighbors, and commuters ourselves, we know the back-to-school season means more than just cooler mornings. It means flashing school zone signs and kids waiting at bus stops across the state. As the school year ramps up, it’s a good time for all of us to slow down, stay alert, and help ensure Alaska’s students get to and from school safely.
The Roads Look Different in Fall
When school is back in session, the daily routine on our roadways changes. From busy intersections to quiet residential streets, you’ll see more children walking, biking, or boarding buses during early morning and afternoon hours. These moments call for greater awareness and a renewed focus on responsible driving.
Children don’t always follow crosswalks perfectly. They can dart between parked cars or take a direct path to the playground. Add in local wildlife and changing light conditions, and the case for caution behind the wheel becomes even stronger.
School Buses Deserve a Full Stop
Our state law requires drivers to stop when a school bus displays its flashing red lights and stop arm, even if you're on a two-lane road heading in the opposite direction. The only exception is when there's a physical barrier (like a median) separating your lane from the bus.
Taking a few extra moments isn’t just about following the rules. It’s about showing respect for the children who share our streets every day.
Put the Distractions Down
We all lead busy lives, but distracted driving increases risk for everyone. Sending a quick text or reaching for something in the backseat can take your attention off the intersection at the wrong moment.
Bright headlights, mindful speeds, and a little extra patience go a long way toward keeping our streets safe for everyone. In Alaska, where the conditions change quickly, those habits matter even more.
An Accident-Free Start to the School Year
Fueling Alaska’s communities is just one part of what we do. Supporting the well-being of those we serve is the bigger picture.
From all of us at Delta Western, thank you for driving with care, and have a safe school year.
