Investing in Alaska's Future: 150 Students and $1 Million Later
Fueling Education Across the State
Since 2006, the Delta Western Scholarship for Continuing Education has helped nearly 150 Alaskan students afford higher education. With more than $1 million awarded across the state, this long-standing program reflects Delta Western’s deep commitment to the communities where its employees live and work.
Expanding Access to Education in Our Communities
The scholarship program is a cornerstone of the company’s community investment efforts, created to support students pursuing a wide range of postsecondary paths, from four-year degrees to trade certifications and technical programs. Offered in every community where Delta Western operates across Alaska, this scholarship creates opportunities for students who might otherwise find higher education out of reach due to distance or cost.
“This scholarship reflects one of our core values - being genuinely invested in the communities where our employees live and work. We know there are bright, motivated students everywhere in Alaska, and we want to help them reach their goals,” said Michaela Lincoln, Human Resources Manager.
Each year, an average of six to seven scholarships are awarded, each valued at $10,000 and distributed over multiple years. Students apply through their schools, and recipients are announced each spring, often by a Delta Western manager at local award ceremonies.
Real Stories, Real Return
While the scale of the program is significant, its true impact is reflected in the individual stories of students who receive the scholarships.
“It’s been really rewarding to see some of the journeys these students have taken,” reflected Michaela Lincoln, Human Resources Manager. “One of our recipients came to intern with Delta Western and then worked for us for a time. Another returned to Yakutat and secured small business grants. She opened a coffee stand and even started helping others launch their own businesses. It’s especially meaningful to see these students return home and give back to their communities.”
These examples reinforce just how valued the program has become across Delta Western’s footprint.
“Every administrator I’ve worked with has been incredibly enthusiastic about the program,” said Michaela Lincoln, Human Resources Manager. “They’re grateful we offer it, and we’re just as grateful to have their partnership. It’s become something students look forward to every year.”
Investing in Alaska’s Future
For nearly two decades, the Delta Western Scholarship for Continuing Education has done more than help 150 students pay for school. It’s helped build pathways for young people, for their families, and for Alaska’s future.
