Exploring the Places We Love, Because We Live Here Too
At Delta Western, we take pride in fueling more than just vehicles. We help power Alaskan journeys.
As a company rooted in the communities we serve, we know that some of Alaska’s most remarkable destinations are just a short drive away. These three escapes showcase the cultural richness and easy access to wilderness that make our community unique.
Mendenhall Glacier and Nugget Falls
Located just 20-30 minutes from downtown Juneau, Mendenhall Glacier is one of Alaska’s most iconic and accessible natural landmarks. The Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center offers panoramic views of the glacier, engaging exhibits, and access to a network of walkways that highlight the area’s dramatic landscape.
One of the most popular routes is the Nugget Falls Trail, an easy and scenic walk that leads travelers to a 377-foot waterfall cascading into Mendenhall Lake. Nearby, the Steep Creek boardwalk offers a chance to spot black bears fishing for salmon during spawning season.
Tenakee Springs
Approximately 100 miles northwest of Juneau and accessible via the Alaska Marine Highway ferry, Tenakee Springs is a quiet coastal town and perfect for those seeking a slower pace.
With no cars on the main road, the town is known for its public hot springs and surrounding wilderness. Locals and tourists alike often come to soak in the bathhouse or explore nearby trails via bike or on foot. Water-based activities are particularly popular ways to spend a summer afternoon, with charter operators offering fishing, kayaking, and even whale watching.
SHRINE OF ST. THÉRÈSE TONGASS NATIONAL FOREST
Just a quick trip from downtown Juneau, the Shrine of St. Thérèse invites visitors to slow down and enjoy nature. Situated on a coastal peninsula, the site includes a historic chapel, a walking labyrinth, and paths with views of Lynn Canal and the Chilkat Mountains, all designed to foster a sense of peace and connection.
For those eager to experience more of the area’s lush landscape, head south to Glacier Gardens. Nestled within the Tongass National Forest—the largest national forest in the United States—this botanical garden spans 50 acres of vibrant temperate rainforest. Guests can take an hour-long guided Rainforest Adventure tour that winds through towering trees and cascading waterfalls, culminating in a cliffside view of the forest.
From glacier-fed waterfalls to quiet hot springs and coastal sanctuaries, these destinations highlight why those of us at Delta Western choose to live and work in Alaska. For more road-trip inspiration, read our recent blog on the stunning Tracy Arm Fjord here.
