Your Fall Home Heating Checklist

What to check before colder weather arrives

Fall can arrive quickly up north, so a little preparation now can go a long way once colder weather settles in.

At Delta Western, we’re here to help our neighbors get ready for the season ahead, starting with a few simple checks to make sure your home heating setup is in good shape.

Give Your Tank a Pre-Winter Check

Your fuel tank has an important job ahead of it. Before winter arrives, take a look at its overall condition.

Check for visible signs of leaks or moisture around the tank, valves, and connections, along with anything that appears damaged or out of place.

After that, follow your nose. A strong fuel smell emanating from the tank deserves attention, as it may indicate a leak or venting issue that should be addressed.

Clear the Way Before the Snow Arrives

Summer can leave behind tall grass, brush, branches, and other growth around your tank and delivery areas.

While the ground is still clear, take time to address overgrowth and make sure your tank remains fully accessible. The Alaska Division of Forestry & Fire Protection recommends keeping tanks at least 30 feet from a structure when possible, with 10 feet of clearance around the tank.

Clearing the area now can also make it easier for your Delta Western driver to safely reach your tank when it’s time for a drop off.

Plan Ahead for Fuel Deliveries

Cold weather is not the ideal time to discover that your fuel supply is running low. Before winter sets in, take a moment to consider how you’ll stay on top of your home heating fuel throughout the season.

Delta Western offers three home heating delivery plans designed to give customers different levels of convenience, control, and flexibility.

With Smart Monitor, a monitor installed on your tank connects to a mobile app so you can check your fuel level in real time. Delta Western also tracks your supply and automatically schedules refills.

Smart Fill uses your typical fuel usage to anticipate when you’ll need a refill and automatically schedules deliveries for you before your tank gets low.

And if you prefer to manage your own fuel, Flex Fill puts you in control. You monitor your tank and call your local Delta Western office when you’re ready for a delivery.

Get Ready for the Season Ahead

Preparing for an Alaska winter starts before the snow falls. Taking a little time now to check your tank, clear the surrounding area, and think ahead about your fuel supply can help you head into the colder months prepared.
