Five Ways Fuel Powers Alaska
From heating homes to fueling recovery, energy plays a role in nearly every corner of Alaska life.
Fuel powers more than engines in Alaska. It keeps homes warm, vessels moving, job sites productive, businesses operating, and neighborhoods prepared when conditions change.
For more than 40 years, Delta Western has proudly partnered with our fellow Alaskans to help make that possible. Today, our team of about 150 Alaskans delivers more than 200 million gallons of fuel each year, navigating everything from extreme winter weather to the logistical challenges of reaching communities that are off the beaten path.
In Alaska, reliable access to energy is essential. Here are five ways fuel helps power our state.
Warming our homes and businesses
Dependable heating is simply a non-negotiable in Alaska. Delta Western supplies heating oil to commercial facilities across the state, keeping local businesses fully operational year-round.
At home, staying warm can also come with a little less worrying. Our residential delivery plans give customers options based on how hands-on — or hands-off — they want to be. Smart Monitor provides real-time tank tracking through an app and automatic delivery scheduling. Smart Fill handles refills automatically based on fuel usage. And Flex Fill lets you monitor your own tank and call when you’re ready.
Powering Alaska’s marine operations
In a state defined by more than 33,000 miles of shoreline, the water is also a workplace.
Commercial fishing, shipping, transportation, and other marine industries rely on efficient, safe fueling to keep vessels moving and operations on schedule. Delta Western provides Coast Guard-certified marine fuel delivery directly to ships and tugs of all sizes across Western and Southeast Alaska.
Supplying construction and heavy machinery industries
Building and maintaining Alaska’s infrastructure takes some serious horsepower.
Our bulk fuel services deliver diesel, gasoline, and other fuels directly to worksites, supporting the equipment behind construction, transportation, aviation, tourism, and other industries.
Fuel is only part of what keeps that machinery moving. As Alaska’s largest distributor of premium lubricants, Delta Western also supplies the oils, greases, and specialty fluids needed to keep heavy equipment and commercial vehicles working smoothly.
Because when the job is already challenging enough, your equipment shouldn’t add another complication.
Fueling the drive
Not every gallon is headed to a fishing vessel or heavy-duty job site. Sometimes it’s just getting you to work, picking up the kids, or keeping an entire company fleet on the road.
Drivers can fuel up at Delta Western retail locations in Haines and Juneau, while our commercial Fleet Cards provide automatic fuel savings and simplified account management for businesses.
Residential customers can save at the pump, too. Smart Monitor and Smart Fill customers receive complimentary fuel cards with exclusive member pricing at participating Delta Western stations. The personalized card connects directly to your heating fuel account, making savings automatic each time you fill up.
Helping communities stay ready for the unexpected
A ready-for-anything supply of fuel is critical for community survival and emergency response.
Over more than 40 years of operation, Delta Western has built a logistics chain around Alaska’s realities: extreme weather, vast distances, limited infrastructure, and communities that may be accessible only by air or water. That takes experienced local people, careful coordination, and backup plans designed to keep fuel moving when it’s needed the most.
That preparation came into play during a January 2026 avalanche advisory in Juneau. With a barge transfer already underway and terminal access potentially at risk, the local team safely continued barge operations, closed the office as a precaution, and staged loaded fuel trucks in secure locations in case access became limited.
Fuel also plays a critical role after emergencies. When severe flooding disrupted communities across Western Alaska, our Bethel team worked alongside state agencies, contractors, and community partners to help support recovery.
Most customers will never see the planning and coordination behind the scenes. That’s the point. Being prepared helps us show up safely and reliably when Alaska throws something unexpected our way.
